DUBAI // A worker who called 999 to demand 20,000 Pakistani rupees to pay for his wife’s treatment after a heart attack will be jailed.

The 21-year-old Pakistani said he would burn down a company’s accommodation in Jebel Ali if he did not receive the money.

Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday convicted him for issuing threats and consuming alcohol without a licence. He was sentenced to three months in prison.

On February 28, the man called Dubai Police’s operations room and demanded money or he would burn down the accommodation. He was immediately located and arrested. He was found aware of his actions and acting normally at the time of his arrest, police said.

A 23-year-old policeman said that, when arrested, the call was visible in the man’s mobile phone history.

The worker needed money to pay his wife’s hospital bill.

He will be deported after serving his jail term.
