The bad news for American football fans is that Super Bowl 50 kicks off at an utterly antisocial time of 3.30am Monday morning in the UAE.

The good news is that there are plenty of places opening early (or late, depending on how you look at it) to make sure you don’t miss any of the action as the Carolina Panthers take on the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California (which is 12 hours behind the UAE).

Venues across Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not only throwing open their doors and switching on the flat-screens to ensure you can catch the sport’s season-ending highlight, but they are also firing up their kitchens and cooking up caffeinated specials to help keep you awake and energised despite the abominable hour. Here’s where to go.

Stars ‘N’ Bars

Yas Island’s most reliable spot for sports fans is promising a real party vibe as kick-off approaches, with replays of action from classic Super Bowls of the past plastered across the screens from 9pm. There will be a variety of refreshment packages available (starting from Dh200) and a suitably greasy American-themed menu of wings, chips, ribs and more.

The venue has plenty of screens, so you won’t miss any the action – but true fanatics can splash out and book a private cabana, which costs from Dh5,000 including food and drink, and can accommodate up to 14 people.

Claw BBQ

This delightfully OTT barbecue and seafood joint in the heart of Downtown Dubai is going all out. As well as screening the action live on 15 screens, staff will keep punters updated on all things NFL through Claw’s dedicated Facebook sports-news platform, The Locker Room.

The chefs have cooked up an intimidatingly indulgent special menu for the occasion. Appropriately dubbed the “Breakfast of Champions” – and described by the venue’s promo blurb as “belly-busting”.

The star attraction is their “waffle mash” creation. Confused? We were, too – it is mashed potato, cooked like a waffle and served with beef bacon, pepper cheese, fried egg and scallions. Also on the menu is “game-day chilli” and breakfast quesadillas.

But if you want a real belly- busting challenge, try the “going for two” offer, aka Claw’s Super Bowl, a double-patty burger specially designed “for the real men in the room”. Please note: The National takes no responsibility for the consequences of consuming such a feast.

If all the match-day excitement isn’t enough, and you want more sports-themed entertainment the next day, Claw will be screening Coach Carter – which, oddly enough, is a basketball movie, but whatever – on Tuesday, alongside themed dishes and drinks.

Perry and Blackwelder’s Original Smokehouse

This bar/restaurant – affectionately known as P&Bs – is decked out in kitschy American-themed decor, with plaques, posters and neon in all corners. To keep you suitably caffeinated, the venue will offer free coffee throughout the match, alongside a calorific menu of chicken and waffles. For the less committed American football fan, and the ones who have to work in the morning, they will also be screening a replay of the match tomorrow night, with special beverage deals to boot.

Crab Tavern

The American surf-and-turf specialists at Dubai’s Media One hotel are taking group bookings (with a four-person minimum) for the special event, at which they will be serving up six food and drinks platters. For Dh195 a head, the Super Bowl Sharing deal includes a spread of chicken wings, shrimp spring rolls, peppered squid, mini sliders, sweetcorn and corn bread, plus refreshments.

Pre-bookings and prepayment are required. Guests can watch the game on one of the venue’s eight screens, or go all out and hire the scary-sounding “crab tank”.

Original Wings & Rings

This fresh-faced, low-key hangout – which describes itself as the “Home of Buffalo Wings” – is offering a special Super Bowl package: Dh150 guarantees you a seat for the game, plus a choice of main course and soft drink.

The vibe here is of the unmistakably masculine, casual sports-bar variety, so don’t be afraid to holler at every hook, hitch, tackle and toss.

Original Wings And Rings is at Dubai International Financial Centre. Visit www.originalwingsandrings.ae or call 04 359 6900 to make a reservation

Super Bowl 50 will air at 3.30am Monday morning on BeIn Sports and OSN Sports
