DUBAI // A mother about to be released was ordered back to her prison cell after she told the court that she had no place to stay.
At Dubai Court of Misdemeanours, the 54-year-old was charged along with her son, 33, and his friend, 30, who are all Pakistanis, with theft. They all denied the charges.
Prosecutors allege that on June 7, the trio stole eight gold chains from Sewar Jewellers in Bur Dubai after they managed to distract the salesman.
“I had just arrived from Pakistan two days before and my son and his friend asked me to accompany them but I didn’t know where we were going,” said the woman as she cried before court.
It was the first time she had been out with her son since arriving in Dubai, she said.
“I saw as they spoke to the salesman but I didn’t see if they took anything because I have very weak sight,” she told the presiding judge, who ordered that the woman be released from her detention cell after seizing her passport as a guarantee.
“But I have no one here, your honour. I was staying with my son and now he is in jail too, so please send me home, I have nowhere to go to here,” she said.
The judge then reversed her release order and asked a policewomen to take the defendant back to her prison cell until a verdict is issued on September 29.
