Television channel Dubai One will broadcast a new programme dubbed as the fashion equivalent of American Idol next month. Fashion Star, which will air weekly from February 3, will see 12 budding designers compete to win their own fashion line, culminating in a grand finale after 10 weeks.

An external production by reality specialists iMagic and filmed in Dubai and Lebanon, the show will see designers create new pieces for three industry experts to judge during a runway show, followed by an elimination round. The winning collection, valued at approximately Dh500,000, will eventually be made available to buy at the online retailer Namshi.

“This is a first-of-its-kind opportunity for elite young designers from various Arab countries to receive advice and guidance from international designer Reem Acra, alongside an outstanding team of designers including Hanaa Ben Abdesselem, a globally recognised Tunisian designer and Lancôme ambassador; Ramzi Tabiaat, creative director of Kuwait online retailer Al Oustoura; and a wide spectrum of fashion experts as guests on each episode,” says Sarah Jarman, director of Dubai One.

The judges will guide and mentor the participants, critiquing them at every stage. Lebanese couturier Reem Acra will have the ultimate vote during the elimination round.

“We were looking for established designers, more than just amateurs.” says Jarman. “Some of them already have their own lines. This was an opportunity for them to grow and to be challenged. They are from a range of countries, showcasing the designers we have in the region – from the UAE, India, Bahrain and Morocco, for example. They are all young and between the ages of 20 and 30.”

Fashion Star will be broadcast in Arabic with English subtitles every Wednesday at 10pm on Dubai One from February 3
