DUBAI // A man stabbed his roommate repeatedly in the stomach as he slept in a row over Dh2,000 but the victim survived, a Dubai court heard on Thursday.
Prosecutors said that Bangladeshi M A, 27, sat on his bed until he was sure his countryman, M N, 29, was asleep before he jumped on the bed and stabbed him repeatedly at their room in Al Nakheel in August last year. The defendant was said to have then sat down on his bed again, calm and smiling.
The victim, who suffered stab wounds to the chest, back and stomach, told prosecutors that he was in a dispute with the defendant over Dh2,000.
Another roommate was woken by the commotion. “I woke up to the sound of M N screaming for help. I jumped to turn on the light, only to find the victim falling out of bed, covered in blood,” said M R, 27.
He told prosecutors he saw the defendant sitting calmly on his bed, adjacent to the victim’s.
Emirati policeman A M, 23, said he found the victim on the ground in a pool of blood, and his stomach was exposed due to the knife wounds.
The officer said the victim pointed at M A and told the officers that he tried to kill him.
“The defendant was sitting on his bed smiling. He told me that he stabbed M N using a knife he bought from a nearby supermarket, and showed it to us,” said the officer.
At Dubai Criminal Court M A denied the charge of attempted murder, and told the presiding judge that he did not intent to kill the victim, merely injure him.
The next hearing is on February 22.
