DUBAI // A 41-year-old man accused of threatening to splash acid onto his ex-wife’s face said she was trying to frame him to win custody of their children.
“These are malicious accusations, your honour. She is filing several cases against me because she is trying to win custody of our children after she remarried,” Egyptian O M told Dubai Criminal Court.
Under UAE law, when a woman marries after getting a divorce, she automatically loses custody of her children from the first husband.
Prosecutors said that on November 18 last year, O M, threatened S G, 31, from Egypt, by calling a mutual friend, M E, and informing him that if she did not leave him alone, he would throw acid on her face and her mother, who lives in Egypt.
“I received a call from M E when I was at work. M E told me that my ex-husband called him and told him that if I did not get out of his way, he would splash me and my mother with acid and he would come to where I live and cause me harm,” the ex-wife told prosecutors.
M E confirmed to prosecutors he received the call from the defendant during which O M allegedly issued the threats.
The defendant denied a charge of issuing threats in court on Monday morning and said his ex-wife is trying to put pressure on him so he lifts the travel ban he has on his children and to also win their custody.
The next hearing will be on March 3.
