DUBAI // A man was arrested while trying to leave the country after stealing cash from a work colleague, prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court.

Egyptian A A, 36, denied a theft charge when he appeared in court. Prosecutors said that on December 21 last year, 51-year-old accountant T A left Dh34,830 in his desk drawer when he went to perform Al Isha prayers at about 7.30pm.

When he returned 15 minutes later, he noticed the cash was missing. “I informed my boss and the head of public relations at the company,” said T A.

Police were called the following morning.

Emirati A M A, 48, said A A confessed to the theft but promised to return the money.

He was arrested the following day at Dubai International Airport.

The next hearing will be on February 11.
