DUBAI // Two maids stole jewellery and three smartphones from a palace of a member of the ruling family, a court has heard.

The Sri Lankans, aged 34 and 31, were not in Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday to enter a plea to a charge of theft.

The court was told that in March a 42-year-old Egyptian supervisor spotted one of the maids rushing to her room in a suspicious manner and followed her.

“I saw her hiding something in her room and when I checked I found jewellery and three iPhones,” said the supervisor, who then contacted police.

She said the maid told her she stole the items with the help of two other maids but one of them had absconded.

A police officer said that the defendants blamed the absconding maid for stealing the items, which she asked them to hide.

The next hearing will be on October 11 to summon the defendants.
