ABU DHABI // Hundreds of workers have been evacuated from an under-construction building adjacent to Beach Rotana hotel and Abu Dhabi Mall.

Thick, dark smoke continues to billow from the top of the building, with civil defence helicopters circling the site.

One onlooking construction worker said that the fire had started at about 10.30am on Tuesday.

“Today I know what it is be afraid of death,” said Mohammed Marouf, 34, who was working on the 8th floor of the building that now exceeds 25 floors.

The Bangladeshi, who has worked on the building for more than two months, said he and fellow workers began evacuating when smoke started to engulf them.

“I’ve seen fires on construction sites before but nothing like this,” said Mr Marouf, who has worked in Abu Dhabi for more than 25 years.

Another Bangladeshi construction worker said he saw the fire begin on the floors directly above him.

“I was working on the ground floor and you could see smoke coming from the lower floors above us,” said Bilal Al Din, 37.

Abu Dhabi Police cars have cordoned off the area surrounding the building, including the adjacent bridge leading to Al Maryah Island. Debris can be seen falling off the side of the building.

Only emergency vehicles, including fire engines, ambulances and lorries carrying water tankers can be seen on the bridge.
