DUBAI// A man who wrote his brother-in-law’s name as the father of his baby on official documents to prevent his first spouse from finding out about his new wife will spend three years in jail.

The 34-year-old Iraqi and his 25-year-old Emirati wife were both found guilty of forgery and use of forged documents by the Dubai Criminal Court.

The couple married in the UAE and their child was born on February 5, 2012 at Dubai’s Zulekha hospital.

They changed the father’s name on the birth certificate to the mother’s brother, who suffers from a mental condition. They also altered their marriage contract by replacing the husband’s name with his brother-in-law’s.

The wife’s 21-year-old sister said her sibling married the Iraqi and both made forgeries after they had a baby girl.

The wife confessed to knowing about the forgeries but not to taking part in making them.

She said she was now divorced and that her husband made the forgeries because he did not want his first wife to find out about his new marriage and also because it was very difficult to have the birth certificates issued from the Iraqi embassy.

The wife was also sentenced to one year in jail.
