AJMAN // An Emirati teenager who was filmed as he threw a cat against a wall and left it to die was laughing at the incident in a taxi afterwards, the car’s driver has said.
A video of the 17-year-old, Mohammed, picking up and throwing the cat has went viral on social media since the incident in Ajman last month, with many people voicing their disgust.
The teenager and his family told The National he has hated cats since he had one which was “possessed by a demon” as a child. He has also visited police to make a complaint against a woman he said posted the video online.
The Pakistani taxi driver, whose car is visible in the video, said the teenager was a regular customer and he witnessed the incident.
“What Mohammed did was horrible and I did not expect him to do that,” said Abidhussan, who would only give his first name. “He has no heart and he is not a human.”
The driver said the incident happened about a month ago, when he went to Al Rashidiya in Ajman, to pick Mohammed and his friend up from a massage centre.
“I was sitting inside the cab waiting for Mohammed to come from the massage centre,” Abidhussan said. “He saw a cat, held it and took a selfie picture with it. Then he held its tail and threw it at the wall.
“Some people in the area saw what he did but no one did anything at that moment or talked to him.
“I took water from my car and put it on the cat. It was bleeding from the nose and mouth.
“They rode the cab and were both laughing too much. I told Mohammed, ‘Why you did that? You are not a human and you have no heart and no mind. If the cat dies, God will punish you’. He replied, ‘No problem, never mind’. I did not see him feeling sorry for what he did.
“As well, I could not stop blaming him. I kept every day telling him the same thing and talked to him hundreds of times but every time he says, ‘No problem’.”
The taxi driver was not certain whether the cat died or not but “when I put water on it, it was hardly breathing, but maybe it died because it is a small cat”.
The teenager’s mother said her son has had hatred for cats for years.
“I am a cat lover, and I love having them at the house and taking care of them,” she said. “But after that incident with the cat that we had before, I stopped adopting them because it has affected negatively on my son. He always thinks that all cats are possessed by a demon.”
Of the video, she added: “When I saw the video on Mohammed’s phone, I got annoyed and upset from what he did and his father and I blamed him because he should not do that with souls created by Allah.
“I always advise my son to not do that with cats and try to stop him if I see he would hurt one. People do not know Mohammed’s story with cats.”
However, she said that she has been offended by the social media storm and that her family will be seeking justice against the woman they believe posted it online.
“They ask for animal rights but where is my right when everyone abused and insulted me by using bad words in the comments?” she asked. “Where is my guilt? We have a right that we want to get from the person who published the video.”
The teenager, an electrical engineering student, said when he sees cats he always thinks about hitting them.
“My friends and family always stop me. I have a psychological complex against them due to the story that happened with me years ago,” he said.
“I am not the one who captured and published the video. And on Saturday, I went to Al Hamidiya Police Station to know who posted the video on social media and to complain against them because they have no right to do that.”
