SHARJAH // Senior citizens and children were evacuated from a residential home after a fire broke out in a nearby building.

Teams from Sharjah Police and Civil Defence helped to evacuate several buildings in Al Qaraen after a fire started on the ground floor of a building under construction at 2.30pm on Tuesday.

It took fire fighters around four hours to bring the flames under control after the fire spread to higher floors. Crews from Al Dhaid, Al Sajaa and Civil Defence headquarters were at the scene while police cordoned off the area.

Ahmad Al Meil, Media Director at Sharjah Social Services, said officers evacuated residents from the one-storey building as a precaution.

“Children at the centre were evacuated as well. As several people require medical monitoring, we transferred them to Al Qasimi and University hospitals in Sharjah.”

The residents were moved to the Sharjah Centro hotel, Mr Al Meil said.

There were no injuries, said Lt Col Sami Al Naqbi, director of Sharjah Civil Defence. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
