Chinese photographer Chengliang Liu’s photo essay of family scenes of rural Chinese homes won the ninth edition of the Emirates Photography Competition.
Liu, whose submission Love on the cooking bench was selected out of 30,000 entries from around the world, was awarded a FIAP gold medal and Dh100,000 cash prize at a ceremony in the capital recently.
This year, photographers had to submit aesthetically appealing and creatively framed shots for the main theme ‘Family Album’ to win the grand prize. The competition is supported by the international Federation of Photographic Art and Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority. This year, organisers received images from 4,800 photographers from 90 countries. More than 18 participants were awarded this year.
Dimitrious Markoglou’s work Loneliness got the first prize in the main theme category, with the photographer winning Dh20,000 and a gold medal. Soul by Egyptian photographer Mohamed Nasr was awarded a sliver medal and Dh15,000 and Saudi-national Abbas Alkhamis received a bronze medal and Dh10,000 for Indians Gypsies in the same category.
“The judging panel was astounded by the quality, depth and diversity of submissions for this ninth edition,” says Badar Al Nomani, head of the TCA Abu Dhabi Arts Department.
He says they decided to declare Liu as the winner this year because his portfolio captured the essence of the theme. “[He captured] genuine moments of family life, where the surroundings are used to amplify the emotion of the composition and complement the subject and emphasise its character.”
Egyptian artist Marwa Seida won the creative prize for her collection of images in the Life category, and was awarded Dh50,000 and a gold medal.
The competition also awarded talented Emiratis who participated in the Nour Ali Rashid Award for the Emirati Photographer and the Emirati Photo Award categories. The winning portfolio consisted of four black and white images Identity is a choice, Beyond the masks, Restraining hands and Something between facts by Ahlam Al Ahmed. The UAE National was awarded a gold medal and Dh50,000.
More than 200 winning photographs will be on display in a three-month exhibition at Manarat Al Saadiyat until July 13. A series of masterclasses and workshops will also be held from today and three winning photographers will share their experience today (March 29).
