DUBAI // A businesswoman who caused nerve damage to a waiter’s hand after accidentally hitting him with a broken glass has been sentenced to three months in jail.

The Uzbek woman, 40, confessed to a charge of physical assault and told Dubai Criminal Court that she threw the broken glass at a man but it hit the waiter by mistake when he got in the way.

She also confessed to consuming alcohol without a licence on the night of October 15, 2014. The woman and the waiter both agreed he was not hit intentionally.

“I did not mean to cause any harm to anyone,” the woman told judges. She said that a Sudanese man threw the glass at her so she threw it back at him but it accidentally hit the waiter.

The incident happened in a hotel in Muraqqabat and caused the Tunisian waiter a severe cut to his right hand, damaging nerves and leaving him with a 25 per cent permanent disability.

The 29-year-old waiter said he was aware she did not mean to hit him but that his injury had required surgery and he still suffers from pain.

No explanation was given as to why the case has taken almost two years to get to court.
