ABU DHABI // The actor and entertainer Tyrese Gibson on Tuesday launched a stinging attack on US presidential hopeful Donald Trump and his Islamophobic views.
“As much as it may seem like Americans are supporting him, we are not,” Gibson said.
“He is being supported by people that see things the way he sees them, but that does not represent the whole of America.
“We stand with the Muslim community, with the Arab community, with the UAE and with all Muslims.”
Mr Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States was wrong, Gibson said, and did not reflect the views of most Americans.
“We are not into dividing, we are not into being mean, or racist practices and bigotry, and I think it would be awful for anyone to assume that because of the acts of a certain few that they should generalise and overreach, and say bad things about an entire community.
“Some of the nicest people I’ve met in my life happen to be Muslim, Arab, Emirati, and I spend a lot of time here.
“I am angered, offended and bothered by Donald Trump and his statements and anyone who is in support of them, so we are going to show up when it counts the most – when it’s time to vote.”
Gibson, famous for his role in The Fast and the Furious film series, for which Abu Dhabi was a location, is on a winter break in the capital and hosted an impromptu meet-and-greet yesterday with fans at his hotel.
After about three hours of signing autographs and DVDs and posing for photos, he sat down with The National to discuss the progress of his plans for a major film studio project in Abu Dhabi.
“I have very big ideas, and very big intentions,” he said. “I feel the only way to combat media is with media. That’s my goal.”
Gibson announced his Voltron Studios ambitions on a visit to Abu Dhabi last year, and he has backers both in the US and the UAE.
The plans are now taking a firmer shape, and the studio will be far more than a production line for entertainment.
“My focus and vision has not strayed. I am focused on what I want to do here in Abu Dhabi,” he said.
“I fell in love with the people, the culture and the energy here, and today was my way of saying thank you to my fans. What I want to do with this movie studio is specifically here in Abu Dhabi.”
Gibson plans to use his ventures in the UAE to influence opinion in the United States and elsewhere.
“My vision and my intention for Abu Dhabi is to change the entire perception of the Middle East here.
“This is not just going to be some local business that will succeed locally. What we want to do here will be powerful and life-changing for everyone in the world.”
Hundreds of fans turned up to meet Gibson at yesterday’s Jumeirah Etihad Towers event. Hotel staff admitted it was as much of a surprise to them as it was to fans when Gibson spontaneously announced it at the weekend.
He has been on holiday in the UAE since December 27, and returns to Los Angeles on Wednesday morning.
