It’s been a wild ride in Abu Dhabi for the cast of Dishoom – one that involved speedboats, superyachts, racing cars and helicopters. It was actor Varun Dhawan’s first visit to the capital, but marked a quick return for John Abraham, who was here last year to film the comedy Welcome Back.

Working out constantly

Although the workdays were filled with on-set thrills, during their time off the two lead stars spent most of their time in the gym.

A constant theme on social media has been Dhawan’s training for his bare-body sequence with Abraham. “John is so disciplined about fitness, and I knew I would have to stand next to him, so it was important that I looked the part,” says Dhawan. “So I did work out quite a bit.” His gruelling fitness regime involved sweating it out at the gym both before filming began and after, spurred on by his macho co-star Abraham. “John is my fitness instructor now,” Dhawan told us when filming began. Then he jokingly pretended to switch roles with Abraham in an Instagram video of himself “training this young buck”, John Abraham – “the struggling new actor”.

Hanging out with other Bollywood stars

Several pictures and videos were also posted of the Dishoom actors joking around at the gym of the InterContinental Hotel with actress Nargis Fakhri, who had a cameo role, and co-star Jacqueline Fernandez.

During a recent interview with The National, Fernandez said: “Varun’s like a bright spark and while we’re not shooting, we goof around – we share the same sense of humour.” On February 24, Dhawan’s gym antics finally paid off as he shot his bare-body sequence with Abraham at Yas Waterworld. Judging by his Instagram shots, his fans will not be disappointed.

“Worked for two months non stop. I guess we all live to achieve our goals,” he wrote, before tucking in to an ice-cream sundae on a night out in Dubai. “Biggest ice cream I ever got for being good,” he added.

Need for an adrenalin rush

While Dhawan learnt to drive a speedboat, and launched Ferrari World’s new roller coaster, Flying Aces, Abraham spent a day at the F1 Circuit, taking a Nissan GT-R for a spin while shooting a Nissan commercial. “If you’re a motor-head like me, then this is the best place to be,” he told us. Fernandez preferred to spend her days off in Dubai – skydiving over the Jumeirah coastline and indulging in a tour of the Dubai Hills Estate. The outing fuelled speculation that Fernandez, who owns an island in her native Sri Lanka and a flat in Mumbai, also plans to buy property in Dubai.

A splash at Yas Waterworld

The cast were joined for two days by Bollywood action star Akshay Kumar, who might be the first person to have been allowed to ride a jet ski inside Yas Waterworld. “They [Yas Waterworld] gave us a really big pool for Akshay to ride the jet ski,” says director Rohit Dhawan. “In the script, [Varun and John] go in and interrogate him regarding this case they’re working on. Akshay really enjoyed it.”
