The capital’s airports operator has overseen the opening of a major airport terminal, the construction of another and the start of several events in its first decade of operation.
Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) was created to manage and operate the Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Al Ain (AAN) airports.
People and assets were integrated into Adac from the Department of Civil Aviation.
Adac took over operation and management of Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI), Sir Bani Yas and Delma Island airports; AUH became one of the first airports in the world to be ACI Service Quality Assured Certified.
Terminal 3 at AUH opened, becoming the home of Etihad Airways; and that same year, the airport’s northern runway became operational.
Terminal 1 at AUH was refurbished; August was the airport’s first-ever month with 1 million passengers passing through its gates; and Expo Check-In opened at Adnec.
A new air traffic control tower opened at AUH; the Abu Dhabi Government announced AUH, AAN and AZI as free zones; AUH was certified as the first airport to be carbon-accredited in the Asia-Pacific region.
The first Abu Dhabi Air Expo was held; AUH achieved a Gold Status for Fast Travel Worldwide in 2012; Abu Dhabi Airports hosted the 18th World Route Development Forum; and construction began in September on the Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC).
A new arrivals hall opened at AUH; national development programme was introduced.
A busy year: US pre-clearance facility at AUH opened; the southern runway was renovated; the first A380 flight from AUH took off; first steel arch assembled at MTC; and VIP terminal at AUH opened.
Passenger traffic at AUH reached 23.2 million passengers per year; Abu Dhabi Duty Free sales reached a record high of Dh1.5 billion; the US pre-clearance facility won an Abu Dhabi Excellence Award; and in August, work began to remove the 18 steel arches supporting the curved roof at MTC.
